ESA CalVal

The ESA financed CalVal is a project about calibration and validation of measurements for various international earth observation missions such as ENVISAT and in support of the CEOS group. The project involves the use of OGC SensorML to describe characteristics of the various instruments in a common format. The resulting SensorML documents contain all relevant calibration information such as detector gains and spectral response for each band or channel which are explicitely given as tables in the XML, and also contain basic identification and classification information for each instrument.

Sensia Software is tasked to provide SensorML descriptions for the following instruments: Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, Terra MODIS, Aqua MODIS, Formosat 2 OCI, SeaStar SeaWIFS and Bird. VisioTerra, our customer, is tasked to provide similar documents for Envisat AATSR, ERS ATSR, SPOT VGT, SPOT VHIR, SPOT HRG, Alos PRISM, Alos AVNIR, Proba CHRIS and Adeos POLDER. A web portal is also being built to provide a single point of access for current and past calibration data for all these sensors.
