Launch of a P2P network for sensor discovery
Sensia Software is starting the development of open source client server components to enable Peer to Peer sensor discovery in large sensor networks. The University of Alabama in Huntsville is our main sponsor and will allow us to bring this idea to life quickly.
The project will provide an easy to use and well documented JAVA library for deploying P2P enabled catalog servers for sensor and observation data. This will allow the creation of a global P2P network for sensor discovery to which many data providers will be able to connect and advertise their data products and services. The client part of the library will help developing software to help data consumers find what they need.
The main advantage of a P2P architecture is the high update rate of the network compared to centralized systems. In this type of architecture, each data provider is in fact responsible for keeping its own catalog up to date and changes are immediately reflected to the network. The standardized P2P protocol will be derived from Gnutella2 and augmented by spatial and temporal query features.
